Jatropa Curcas: The Bio Diesel Medicinal Plant

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Manolito Montala Jatropa Curcas or locally known as Tuba in our country has been used by our ancestors as a folkloric medicine for rheumatic pains, snake bites and also insecticide. The leaves are used as medicine for muscle ailments like rheumatic pains. Simply by applying oil on the leaves and heated by flames and then applied to the skin on where the ailments are. Although it has medicinal properties, the fruit and seed is not edible and poisonous when ingested. The leaves have anti-inflammatory properties but toxic when excessively used internally. The pounded leaves when pounded and made into a poultice can be used to aid in snakebites and also effective as an insecticide. This shrub is erect and the leaves have a usually somewhat rounded at the base, pointed at the tip and toothed at the margins. Distributed though out the Philippines and neighboring Asian countries. Although this is an important addition to the many medicinal herbs (which you can also find some Philippine medical plants in my site on the resource box link below), it is now been discovered as a good bio diesel alternative or additive. Very cost effective and very close to the chemical properties of (fossil) diesel fuel we are using today. Unlike the coconut oil or alcohol additive, which are expensive to produce, Jatropa curcas or tuba is much cheaper. A liter of pure coco bio diesel would cost over P120 or US$2.50, which is why only small amounts of it can be mixed with regular diesel fuel to produce a competitively priced alternative. Since there are no much demand for tuba, and very easy to propagate the plants, it is cost effective. And imagine you can extract 1 liter of oil from 3 kilos of seeds. There are no complicated processes of extracting oil from the seeds unlike coconut oil and alcohol bio diesel. Seeds are sun dried and grounded to extract oil from it. India now leads in the development of Jatropa curcas bio diesel fuel and now people in our country are becoming aware with the help of media. And hoping that the government will push through in promoting this bio diesel fuel. Research on jatropha biodiesel production in the Philippines is being undertaken by the research and development facility in Diliman, Quezon City, of PNOC Energy Development Corp. In India they are talking about planting jatropha in as much as 33 million hectares of wasteland. The proponents envision plantations that can produce enough oil seeds from which biodiesel could be extracted to meet Indias current diesel fuel requirement of 40 million tons annually. Five tons of jatropha oil seeds can produce two tons of biodiesel. The Indian proponents of jatropha biodiesel point out, among others, that the plants grow on poor degraded soils and are able to ensure a reasonable production of seeds with very little inputs. [They are] not grazed by animals [and are] highly pest and disease resistant. Religious Celebrations

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Barry Hopkins Great Britain is a fantastically varied country with many religions worshipped regularly by its inhabitants. The main UK religions are: 1. Christianity 2. Islam 3. Hinduism 4. Sikhism 5. Judaism 6. Buddhist Click on our website to show a calendar of events for each religion. Whichever religion you follow, there are many annual or seasonal events to celebrate, and despite the sometimes huge differences between cultures and traditions, planning any party or celebration generally follows this guideline; You must ensure that the type of party you select is appropriate to the day; Holding a daytime party with food and drink would be completely unfair to Muslims during Ramadan, and a Pig Roast would be extremely offensive to those who belong to the Jewish faith, however a feast of Kosher food would be gratefully received! You will need to advise your caterers of any dietary requirements, and also consider the availability of alcohol; Sikhs dont drink alcohol, so again ensure that suitable alternatives are offered. Ask your caterer if Crockery & Linen hire is included in their quotation, otherwise you may need to hire this separately. Before booking these, also check with your venue as to whether you will need to hire additional tables and chairs. Pick your venue.. by this I mean for your celebration, not for worship! Some churches or temples have their own village halls or function rooms for hire at very reasonable rates, otherwise look at conference centres or hotels to provide a suitable setting. Marquees are very popular celebration venues, as they are easy to decorate and personalize to your own event. If you are having a Marquee, dont forget to also book the portable toilets!! Decoration is a large part of any sort of event; choose from Balloons, Banners, Streamers, Floral Decorations and Table Ware, through to Favours and colour co-ordinated stationery, such as table plans and place cards. To take the strain off yourselves, you could hire a venue decorator, or simply just browse our directory for suppliers! There are a huge amount of entertainments to choose from, childrens entertainers can include magicians, circus acts, bouncy castles and fairground rides. Admittedly, adults are also be delighted by these games and amusements, however for more grown up activities, you could book a comedian, hypnotist or look-a-like. Music suitable for all ages include Discos, Jazz or Tribute Bands, or a perhaps you would prefer a more sedate atmospherical harmony by booking a Harpist, piper or singer to serenade your guests. Click here to see our article on choosing your DJ & Discos. There are also many original bands available who may be suitable to your occasion, you could ask your local place of worship if they have a choir or similar. You may wish to consider hiring a stage, dance-floor, lighting rig or PA system to make your party really stand out! Dont forget all the other essential requirements, such as insurance and cleaners for the morning after! You may wish to contemplate hiring a professional photographer to capture your event. Remember your photographs could be posted online or in newsletters to entice fellow worshippers to join your forthcoming celebrations! Continuously Moving Your Marketing Forward

Tuesday, October 16th, 2007

By Kevin P. Dervin Marketing is an ongoing journey for your business. That might seem like an obvious statement, but the actions of many small business owners might indicate otherwise. For many you build a web site, or create a brochure, or go to a few networking events and then you wait for results to happen. Effective marketing rarely works like that. It takes regular and consistent effort to keep your pipeline full of good high-quality leads that you can work on converting into paying clients. It doesn’t have to be an all-consuming effort, but it does take consistent effort. Here are four ideas for continuously moving your marketing forward: Study up on marketing. There is no shortage of resources out there including books, audio programs, tele-classes, courses, etc. Look for the ones that offer proven, hands-on strategies and tactics, not get-rich-quick schemes. Form or join a “think tank” or “mastermind group.” Find a group of people who will care just as much about your success as you do (and that you’ll care about their success). This isn’t just a group of friends who will tell you what you want to hear, but a group that will hold you accountable and support you. Attend talks and workshops regularly. If you go an participate fully, you’ll often get just a much from the other participants as you will from the talk itself. Brainstorm with those you meet and find out what’s working for them in their business. Get hands-on assistance. Working with a marketing coach or consultant who can help you focus, set goals, prioritize, create action plans, and help hold you accountable could be one of the best investments you make in your business. Support from outside resources like these can help you shift your mindset and make marketing the ongoing journey it needs to be. A Complete Departure

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Carine Nadel Normally, I try to write a humorous column here, trying to put an upbeat look on the world around me on a particular week. So this week, I’d thought I’d warn you, this column is a complete departure. I wrote in the not so distant past about having a week of Mondays. Nothing in that week could compare with the week a co-worker of mine just had to have the unfortunate position of living through. In one short, panicked phone call he received the news that frightens a parent. “Your son has been in an accident, please come to…” From there on I’m sure the updates we were getting were upbeat, until the last one letting us know that he died. At that point, life at work took a nose dive. We were living on the outskirts of this horrible tragedy. They were entering, hands down, the worst nightmare of their lives.None of us should have to ever live through the death of their child. It just shouldn’t be allowed. No one should have their little ones precede them into the afterlife. How can anyone fathom getting up one bright summer morning, serving breakfast, saying goodbye and set off for work and then never, ever see your precious offspring again? What makes this event even more tragic is this 13 year old young man had been a cancer survivor. Wasn’t supposed to survive past age 5. He was a miracle and the couples only child. He was on his bike (wearing a helmet) and collided with an SUV. From what little we know, the driver was not speeding and he was not being reckless, as kids on bikes sometimes dare to be.Imagine when that horrible day was over, he and his wife had to go back to their home to try and sleep-knowing their lives had been changed, irrevocably, forever. My parents lived through that horror. 45 years later, they’ve never been able to shake it. Move on, go forward, have a life, but never have they forgotten the pain or the hole that the loss made in their lives. I know-I was the surviving offspring, and although I was only 4, forty-five years later, I remember it vividly. When we all received the news, one fellow co-worker, who’s son is close to the same age, said he would probably have a heart attack and die out of grief if this were him. I walked down to the ladies room and cried. I cried for the loss of a valiant little boy who will be mourned by many. I cried for his parents, for I can only imagine the grief they must be feeling. And help me, because I also cried out of relief that my pregnant daughter with complications is here for me to worry about and my tattooed son, bless his bodyart, is here for me to grimace at.All of those petty peeves are actually joys, when you consider the awful alternative. How to Set Up Your Target Calorie Intake?

Saturday, October 13th, 2007

By Hristo Hristov The law of bodyweight regulation states that calories control bodyweight. To lose weight, you need to create a negative calorie balance (eat fewer calories than you burn). To gain weight, you need to create a positive calorie balance (eat more calories than you burn). The first step you need to do is estimate what amount of calories you burn every day. All calculations start by estimating your Resting Metabolic Rate (thats the amount of calories you would burn per day if you dont move at all). Scientists have developed formulas for estimating your RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate). They do it by getting a bunch of people together, measuring their RMR using sophisticated methods and then trying to figure out a formula to match their RMRs using weight, height, age and other factors. To calculate your RMR use this formula: In pounds and inches: Men: RMR = (4.54 x Weight in pounds) + (2.44 x Height in inches) (4.92 x Age) + 5 Women: RMR = (4.54 x Weight in pounds) + (2.44 x Height in inches) (4.92 x Age) - 161 In kilograms and centimeters: Men: RMR = (9.99 x Weight in kg) + (6.25 x Height in cm) + (4.92 x Age) + 5 Women: RMR = (9.99 x Weight in kg) + (6.25 x Height in cm) + (4.92 x Age) - 161 Next, you will need to multiply the RMR by an Activity Coefficient (AC). Here are the average ACs for men and women. Sedentary Men: AC = 1.55 Moderately Active Men: AC = 1.78 Very Active Men: AC = 2.10 Sedentary Women: AC = 1.56 Moderately Active Women: AC = 1.64 Very Active Women: AC = 1.82 Your total daily energy expenditure (the number of calories you burn per day) is:TDEE = RMR x AC It is really simple. Calculate your Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR formula). Find your Activity Coefficient (AC) above and multiple the RMR by the AC. If you want to gain weight, set a target calorie intake above your total daily expenditure. If you want to lose weight, set a target calorie intake below your total daily expenditure. The question now is how much below/above your TDEE to set up your target calorie intake. It depends on your specific weight goals. Have in mind that gaining and losing weight is not the same as gaining and losing fat. Most of the time you are going to gain/lose both fat and lean body mass. The old premise that it takes 3500 calories per pound is wrong. It takes 3500 calories to gain/lose a pound of fat. Lean body mass requires about 500 calories per pound. In kilograms these values are 7700 calories per kilogram of fat and 1100 calories per kilogram of lean body mass. For most people, a calorie plan of plus or minus 300 to 1000 calories per day will do the job. Every week weigh yourself and recalculate your total daily energy expenditure. If your progress is slowing down, add or subtract a bigger number of calories to your TDEE. Finally, let me tell you that the above formulas are for average people. In many situations, there are metabolic adaptations that will slow down/speed up your metabolism. All that means that you are going to cut more and more calories to keep the same rate of weight loss rate and you are going to overeat more and more in order to keep the same rate of weight gain. If you are a female, never eat less than 1200 calories per day. If you are a male, never eat less than 2000 calories per day. And remember, you can cut calories, but you can also burn more calories via exercise. Hristo Hristov owns X3MSoftware, a company specializing in developing diet and fitness tracking software. Plastic Surgery Is Not For Everyone

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Sara Goldstein Plastic surgery is becoming more and more common. People all over the country are realizing that plastic surgery is not just something that famous or wealthy people can afford or take advantage of. However, plastic surgery is not for everyone. Plastic surgery aims to correct parts of a patients body that make the patient unhappy, says Dr. Joseph Bauer at the Swan Center for Plastic Surgery in Atlanta, Georgia. This can vary from removing deposits of fat that are unaffected by diet and exercise, to reshaping a nose. Plastic surgery is also different than reconstructive surgery, which attempts to restore the look or function of part of a patients body that has been affected by disease, genetics, injury, or medical treatment. If a patient is unhappy with their appearance, plastic surgery might provide them with a way to look better, and also feel better. Many patients who are unhappy with an area of their body will receive a boost in confidence, improved relationships, and more overall enjoyment with life after their plastic surgery. This does not mean that plastic surgery is a cure for depression. Plastic surgery simply provides a way for people to feel satisfied with the way they look if they have an aspect of their body that displeases them. For a patient to determine if plastic surgery is right for them, they should educate themselves about all aspects of the procedure they want, the possible risks and complications that are associated with the procedure, and the expectations desired from the plastic surgery. Plastic surgery should be viewed as a last resort for some procedures, says Dr. Dean Fardo in Atlanta, Georgia. For instance, a tummy tuck or liposuction procedure should be viewed as a weight loss technique, both are designed to provide the patient with an improved body contour. Prior to plastic surgery, the patient should review all forms of the procedure they want. There are different types of liposuction, for instance, including tumescent liposuction and ultra-sonic liposuction. Being informed about the different procedures will allow a patient to better determine if the plastic surgery procedure they want is really the right one for them. A plastic surgery patient should also be aware that all plastic surgeries have potential risks and complications associated with them. For some procedures, like BOTOX, the possible risks and complications are fairly small. During the initial plastic surgery consultation a patient will be able to go over possible risks with the plastic surgeon. One of the most important aspects of deciding on plastic surgery is the expectation the patient has for their plastic surgery procedure. A good plastic surgery patient will understand that plastic surgery is not a way to achieve perfection, but rather improvement. Plastic surgery can improve a patients appearance so that they feel better about the way they look, and are more confident about their appearance. When deciding on having a plastic surgery procedure, a patient should schedule an initial plastic surgery consultation with an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Bauer or Dr. Fardo. During the initial plastic surgery consultation, the patient will be able to have all their questions about the procedure answered. Also, the plastic surgeon will be able to examine the patient and determine if the plastic surgery procedure they want will achieve the expectations and results they want. If a patient has unrealistic goals or expectations, a plastic surgeon may be able to suggest an alternative treatment for the patient. Your Las Vegas Wedding Doesn’t Have to Look Cheap Even If It Is!

Wednesday, October 10th, 2007

By Mandy Fain One of the reasons that Las Vegas weddings became so popular in the first place was that they were very easy and very cheap. With all the extravagance of the glittery city that Las Vegas has become this is not always the case anymore. Many people now spend just as much on a Vegas wedding as they would on a full blown wedding anywhere else. Las Vegas wedding cheap is still very plausible however. For those who want the good old fashioned Las Vegas bargain wedding there are still a lot of ways to get married without having to max all the credit cards and take out a second mortgage on the house. While being very fiscally responsible and budget friendly, your Vegas wedding can still look very good and here are a few things to consider when planning your budget wedding. Especially if you are not bringing all your friends and relatives to Vegas with you, you can really get away with a lot. The photos you take home with you can show off your great wedding that looks a lot pricier than it was. It was actually Las Vegas wedding cheap. The first thing you should know is that Las Vegas has some great wedding gown rental places. This is a fantastic way to get an expensive look without the exorbitant price of a gown. Not only can you look stunning for your wedding day by you dont have to worry about how pay off the credit card that is still hurting from the dress you will never wear again. Tuxedo rentals are abundant in Vegas as well, so whatever style or size is needed will very, very likely be available and Las Vegas wedding cheap. Another very budget conscious trick can be to select a wedding chapel that is elegantly decorated already. You dont have to buy any decorations at all! This is easily done in Vegas and is Las Vegas wedding cheap. The next part of this strategy is to make sure that your wedding photos are well done. You may want to spend a little more on photography than you would initially think of spending when on a budget. The reason for this is simple. Since you are all dressed up in fantastic rented wedding clothes, this is the time to get gorgeous pictures of you in the elegantly decorated chapel. Catch and Release Fishing - Ensuring Fish For Our Future

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By Craig Fiske Know the proper technique for catch and release fishing. Keep those big ones healthy and strong. Your kids and grandkids will thank you! There is nothing more enjoyable in this world than a great day on the water. If conditions are perfect and the fish are active things dont get much better. Well, maybe catching big fish can add a level of excitement that is hard to match. Fish populations across North America are, in general, suffering. Stocking efforts and recovery programs are happening virtually in every jurisdiction. Some areas are suffering more than others. Think about it. How often have you heard someone say, The fishing just isnt as good as it was a few years ago. That goes for a number of lakes and rivers right across this continent. The good news is you can do something about it. Catch and release fishing is one of the keys to help populations recover. It is pretty straight forward keep only what you are going to eat. And just as importantly, let go the big ones (they lay many times more eggs during the spawn). Too often we see anglers keep more fish than they will eat. Often this is done out of ignorance of the impact to the water system. Unfortunately too often it is done out of lack of respect for the fish and water they are taken from. This has an unbelievable impact on fish populations. Think about it. A good fishing location that has red-hot walleye fishing in the spring for eight weeks can have as many as 100 boats a day visit it. Particularly if the lake is accessible by road. Assume that each boat has 3 anglers in it. Also assume that the limit for walleye is 5 per day. 8 weeks x 100 boats x 3 anglers x 5 walleye = 12,000 walleye! If you are rolling your eyes at that number, dont. There are many lakes that are under tremendous pressure like this and our fish population is taking a pounding! Catch and release fishing is a key to helping our fish populations recover. The key to catch and release is to reduce the mortality rate of the fish. There are things you need to consider Use a barbless hook. It makes the time the fish is out of the water much shorter. It is also much easier on the fish as the barb can often get caught in the throat or the gills making the odds the fish will live much longer (plus it is a lot easier on you as you take the hook out). Try to land your fish quickly. The less energy they spend on the way into the boat, the faster they will recover. This is a key element often not thought of during catch and release practices. If you can keep the fish in the water as you remove the hook, this is a huge advantage for the fish. If you need to pick up the fish, wet your hands first. Try not to squeeze to hard as you hold the fish while you remove the hook. If you can hold the fish upside down, quite often this will immobilize it, and give you a chance to quickly remove the hook! Above all, be gentle! Often you will need to hold the fish in the water as it catches its breath! Be patient, this is an ordeal for any and all fish species. When catch and releasing a fish, do your best to release it in slow water. If there is a current, make sure the head is facing upstream. This will give it a chance to regain its strength and equilibrium. It also forces water through the gills helping the fish realize much needed oxygen. If there is no current, slowly move the fish forward and backward in the water to get the water through its gills! Make sure you dont release an exhausted fish until it appears the gills are working properly. When this happens, the fish will usually swim out of your light grip on its own. It is the responsibility of every angler to take care of our fish population! Limit your catch. Let go the big ones go, and ensure a productive resource of fish for generations to come! Thanks for reading! Good luck out there! Craig Fiske is from Saskatchewan Canada and has been an avid angler for over 35 years!
